Desiré Smith Joins Dane County UW-Extension as VISTA

Desiré Smith

Desiré Smith is the new Americorps VISTA serving as a Community Food Systems Educator for Dane County UW-Extension. She will serve in this position for a year, working to build capacity within community garden networks.

This May Desiré will become a first generation college graduate from the University of Wisconsin Madison with a Bachelors of Science in Community and Environmental Sociology and a Certificate in Environmental Studies. While at the University she has worked with faculty in various departments throughout the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in efforts to increase diversity within the food system. Desiré’s most recent position was as an Education Coordinator for the PEOPLE Program where she assisted with developing Urban Agriculture curriculum for minorities with low-income, inner city, and tribal backgrounds. She brings to UW Extension a passion for diversity and inclusion, food justice, and education.
